Course update and urgent plea to members
We have recently had two days when the course was closed to scarify and top dress the greens and drag mat the fairways, some were then over-seeded. The roped off areas around the greens are improving daily so please ensure that you keep to the trolley paths and keep out of these roped off areas. Some extra areas will be introduced in the coming weeks.
Winter mats are now in use on the 4th, 7th and 15th with the 12th tee now in preparation. Members may continue to play off white tees but must play off the mats on all par 3's in casual play. In the coming few days work will be taking place in the dip short of the 8th green to level the sides and encourage growth in the base. This area will be white lined with the ground under repair signs with a mandatory free drop in all play.
The 7th green will have drainage work taking place this Thursday 15th October and will therefore be closed to all players. Disruption is expected to be minor following the completion of the work.
Now the urgent plea to all members. Our green keepers are all working extremely hard to keep the course in good condition for you all to play on. This work is time consuming and expensive to carry out and pointless if members do not bother repairing their pitch marks or replacing their divots, with last weekend particularly disappointing. Could we please ask you all, whilst waiting to putt, to look around and repair any pitch marks you see and replace divots when you walk down the fairways.
It is your course so please help us to look after it for you.
Thank you
Sam & Chris
On behalf of The Board.

Happy Birthday Tony
Today Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Club celebrated the 95th birthday with one of it's long standing members.
The ‘Oldest Swinger in Town’? Club President, Trevor Bond, and Men’s Captain, Bill Carson, presented an engraved wedge to Tony Snook today on his 95th birthday. Tony has been a member since January 1969 and was Club Captain in 1977. He is now an Honorary Life Member and still plays two or three times a week, always walking! Tony is a real gentleman, with a kind word for everyone and always wearing a smile on his face. The second photo is Tony with his regular playing partners Sam Ralph, Roger Tuffley and Paul Auckland who also presented Tony with a bottle of his favourite Scotch.
Tony has had a varied and extraordinary life. He was married to his beloved wife Mary for 67 years before she sadly passed away some four years ago. He played to a high standard of cricket and knew the likes of Colin Cowdery and played in the Bournemouth area for a number of years. Those skills transferred to golf where he always drives up the middle and his putting is exemplary. Of late he complains about his right hand restricting his swing, but we notice that he can still raise a pint of ale with ease at the 19th!
We also can’t overlook his contribution to our country in World War II. As a young lad of 17 years he joined Bomber Group 3, Squadron 115 Mildenhall Hub as a rear gunner in a Lancaster and was stationed at various aerodromes in the East and North of England.
Tony is a remarkable gentleman and a great asset to Bungay Golf Club and we all wish him many more years of friendship and playing golf with us.

Our Ladies' Captain, Ann Kemp, has asked me to circulate the procedures to follow for our forthcoming ladies’ competitions. Our first post-Lockdown competition will be held on Tuesday 7 July and will be a Stableford. Here they are:

The closing date for these is the 5th July, a chance to get your name up on the honours boards.

Safety Reminder
Fog
If your tee off time is before (or after) the Pro Shop opens and it's foggy, YOU MUST be able to see the trees at the BACK of the 1st green before it is safe to play.
If play is delayed once it is safe to do so, you go out in tee time order.
We still have lots of people walking on the course, that are unaware of the dangers following the shutdown, so we as members have to be more even more vigilante.
Updated Procedures 4 Ball
11th June 2020
Further to the recent amendments to our temporary procedures we have some additional changes based on the feedback we have received and continued analysis of the BRS system etc.
From Saturday 20th June, the 2 ball only restriction will be changed from up to 8.30am to up to 7.52am, 7 days per week. i.e. all tee times from 6.00am to 7.52am will be for 1 or 2 balls only.
All tee times from 7.59am onwards will be available for 3 and 4 balls as well.
This and all the revised procedures have been implemented in order that we comply with the Government lockdown guidelines whilst still trying to be as fair as possible to the wide demographic of members we have and their own differing requirements.
This is not always an easy task and we appreciate your flexibility in adopting the procedures during these challenging times.
It has been suggested that some of the temporary measures could become permanent ones once all lockdown restrictions are over and we return to as near normality as possible. To this end we will be carrying out a survey over the next few weeks to seek your views on which, if any, changes could be made permanent. So please look out for that when it is sent out and we will look forward to your responses.
We will continue to keep you up to date with any future changes as soon as we can, and, as always, we welcome your comments and feedback.
In the meantime, we hope you continue to enjoy your golf #PlaySafeStaySafe
Many thanks
The Board

Haskell Win
Saturday 18th May
It was a very tight match losing the morning round by one on the last hole.
Th after noon started well with Lils and Sam winning the first hole to bring it back all square. Getting stuck behind a large society, concentration started to go and Lils and Sam found themselves four down. Digging deep they pulled it back to all square going down the last. This was halved which took the match onto extra holes.
Lils and Sam had one the first hole on both previous rounds so were happy to have the honour and put the home side under pressure. A great drive from Lils down the centre of the fairway left Sam the same chip she had had previously.
Thorpeness ended up playing three off the tee and with Sam's chip safely on the green the match was given to Bungay.
Thanks to the caddies Tony James and Wendy Walpole and all the supporters that travelled over.
Beaumont Win

Congratulations to our Beaumont Team beating Southwold away by 1 hole.
Stuart Greenwood and John Glen 8 up; Tony James and Roger Thake 1 down; Malcolm Campbell and Chris Whymark 5 down; David Douglas and Alan Braddon 1 down.
It was a strong Southwold team and it was a good "blooding" for the lads - a match played in good spirit and in typical spring Southwold conditions - windy at times with occasional drizzle!

Dermot Cronin the Men's Captain of Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Club has chosen Big C as his charity of the year for 2019.
Cancer is something that has affected me personally in the past and 2018 was a particularly difficult year with many family and friends being treated for or succumbing to this terrible disease. It is also something that I know affects many of our club members and their families and friends.
Raising funds for the Big C will help provide the people of Norfolk & Waveney with access to the best treatment and support in their local areas.
Today, Big C Centres are there for anyone affected by cancer – providing first-hand support, information and a listening ear to those who need it.
For tomorrow, Big C funds local research into cancer and invests in vital diagnostic and medical equipment and facilities in local hospitals, bringing better care for local people, closer to where they live.
I think it is a very worthy cause which provides invaluable services and support to the people of Norfolk & Waveney and all our club members and their families.
At the Captains Drive-In on New Years day members and guests contributed £133.50 to the Big C.
A find raising page for the year has been set up with the Big C at https://fundraise.big-c.co.uk/fundraising/fundraising-pages/bungay-and-waveney-valley-golf-club/
